Welcome to “A Finnegan Summer 2014” at Vancouver College. Vancouver College has been a leader in Catholic Education in the Lower Mainland since 1922, and every year we look forward with great excitement to providing our services to the community through our summer camp program. Our camp facilitators are experienced teachers, primarily from Vancouver College, and our programs offer a wide variety of academic enrichment, recreation, and sports camps for boys and girls of all ages.

Jump Start to K
For girls and boys starting Kindergarten in September. During this 2-week introduction to Kindergarten camp, children will enjoy a fun-filled day that will include early literacy activities, math skills, art activities, science topics and physical activity. A great way to experience being at school the whole day! Please send along a healthy snack, lunch, drinks, water bottle, and sun hat. No class on July 1. (Instructor - Mrs. Cathy Wolfman)

Elementary Explorers (Gr. 1-2)
In this camp students will explore the academic pursuits of literature, writing, math, science, geography, and art. In the morning, we will focus on classroom type activities and in the afternoon, we will take it outside or to the gym. Come be an explorer with Finnegan Summer! (Instructor – Ms. Tricia Listecki)

Literacy, Numeracy & Sport (Gr. 3-4)
New for 2014. Students will spend their mornings creating literacy and numeracy projects with IPADs, as well as other stimulating art, writing, and academic pursuits. Week one afternoons will be spent on O’Hagan Field developing soccer skills, week two afternoons will be focused on basketball and tennis. A great way to spend afternoons having fun and developing sports skills! No class on July 1. Instructor: Ms. Breanna Llloyd Coaches: Mr. Dante Luciani and Mr. Spencer Ho

Art and Painting (Gr. 4-7)
Students in this art camp will focus on painting and drawing. We will explore the world of colour mixing and colour theory using acrylic paints and creating a final acrylic on canvas painting. Students will also learn some basic drawing techniques and get an introduction to the elements of art. We will have fun, get messy, and if the weather permits we will do lots of our work outside in the sunshine. Instructor: Ms. Euphemia Redden

Reading, Writing, Art, and Activities (Gr. 1-2)
The students in this camp will be engaged in reading and writing activities for the morning section. Story telling, reading, and paragraph writing will enhance the academic flavour of the camp. The afternoon will be filled with art projects and a variety of movement games. (Instructor - Ms. Barb Seppelt)

Film and Animation (Gr. 6-8)
Are you an aspiring film-maker? Do you dream of being behind the next Pixar movie? Animation and film camp may be exactly what you’re looking for. We teach you everything you need to know to make a short film, and make your first animation. No prior experience required. Instructors: Ms. Euphemia Redden & Matthew Paletta (VC’14)

Irish Football (Gr. 6-8)
Campers will receive individualized instruction in the development of football fundamentals with particular emphasis on throwing, catching, kicking, and punting. This is a non-contact camp requiring no equipment and will be an excellent base for those participants wishing to go on and play high school football. Irish Varsity players will assist at the camp ensuring a low camper instructor ratio. This camp is strongly recommended for any incoming Grade 8 student wishing to play football for VC in September. Basketball Basics (Gr. 3-6)
Fun introduction to the game of basketball. Campers will learn how to protect the ball, dribble with either hand, throw different passes, shoot properly, make a layup, and more. (Coach - Mr. Dante Luciani)

Irish Basketball (Gr. 7-8)
This camp focuses on giving players an opportunity to run through a variety of drills that will help to improve their basic basketball skills in dribbling, shooting, passing, footwork, and defensive play. Half-day format will allow for both drills and scrimmaging. Coach: Ms. Trixie Cruz

Irish Volleyball (Gr. 6-8)
This camp focuses on giving players an opportunity to tune their bumping, setting, and service skills through a variety of fun and informative drills. Campers will learn different volleyball systems and will engage in fun individual and team games. Coach: Mr. Joseph Santos (VC ’05)

This camp is for those with some experience who are looking to develop and improve their skill set. Scrimmages will be played daily so campers can also get game experience. Fitness is an integral part of soccer and therefore campers will receive fitness training and access to high quality equipment in order to be ready for the upcoming season. Campers are please asked to bring their own cleats and shin pads. Full Day campers are also welcome. Coaches: Spencer & Matthew Ho (VC ’12)

Learn to Row (Gr. 8+)
Beginner rowers will receive complete instruction in all aspects of rowing in this 2-week introductory camp. Focus will be on sculling in small boats with emphasis on technique and safety. Bring sandals or rubber boots and water bottle. Location - False Creek (Coach - Mr. Dereck Schwandt)

High Performance Training Camp (Gr. 9+)
This camp is aimed at the high school athlete who is looking to develop the functional skills necessary for high-level athletic performance. Athletes will follow a four-week training program where they will perform and receive instruction on proper sprint and agility mechanics, power development, plyometric exercises, and strength training including Olympic lifting techniques. This camp runs M/W/F x 4 weeks for a total of 12 sessions. (Coach - Mr. Scott Vass)

Head Start: Transitioning to Middle School (Gr. 7/8)
This camp for incoming Grade 7 and 8 students, facilitated by Mr. Kozikowski (VC’s Middle School Assistant Principal), is designed to help make the transition to Middle School smoother. Mornings will give students a head start academically by exposing them to some of the topics covered in English and Math. To help students with their organizational skills, they will be introduced to the binder system, used virtually by all students at VC. Afternoons are spent doing a variety of recreational activities, in and outside school, allowing participants to interact with each other and their teacher(s). Nothing makes a student feel more at ease than to see a friendly face in the hallways when they arrive in September. (Instructors - Messrs. Rob Kozikowski & Darren Yanko) Max 60

Model UN: Public Speaking and Debate (Gr. 7-9)
This program aims to empower students with the skills of effective communication through the avenues of debate and public speaking. Topics covered include: the process and protocols of debating; how to construct an interesting and effective speech; keeping thoughts and arguments organized; standing and delivering speeches with confidence; and effective rebuttal techniques. The program is run at a level that is comfortable for all participants. (Instructor - Mrs. Maureen Wicken)

Alumni Hockey Tournament Register for the 7th Annual VC Alumni Hockey Game at the Thunderbird Ice Centre, UBC. Looking for the first 4 goalies and 56 skaters to sign up. There will be 4 teams with each team playing a min. of 3 x 30 min games and possibility of a 30-min. final. Every player will receive a surprise gift and some Beaver Buzz Energy drinks to keep you fuelled up. Post game social will be at Mahony and Sons Public House at UBC (includes a buffet pasta dinner with your choice of (1) beer, wine, or highball.)     $75.00 ea.   SOLD OUT!
