About Our Video

The first question people ask us when they see our animation is, "Did you guys really make that?"

The answer is a proud, "Yes, we did!"

Here's the history of how this project came to be — a wonderful collaboration among students, faculty and staff.

Back in Year 1, we taught ourselves the basics of animation with help from Mark Battley, head of Digital Media, and online tutorials. By our second year, we were experimenting with professional animation software.

We started using scanned photographs, paper cut-outs and drawings to create a distinctive style that really appealed to us. We used this technique for the title sequence of Markus Liik's '08 senior film project "Misguided."

The Office of Advancement was impressed, and asked if we could use the same technique to communicate an important message for them: That UCC's tuition only covers 80% of each student's tuition. The remaining 20% comes from the generous support of our donors.

We were thrilled to have a professional contract! Working from an initial idea by Mr. Battley, we produced a short "proof-of-concept." Then, with the help of UCC's new animation and film teacher, Tavo Rooneem, we storyboarded each of the scenes, produced an "animatic" and met with the Advancement Office to shape our final product.

After roughing in each scene, we met regularly with our three producers to make sure that the sequence worked both commercially and aesthetically. Five months later, we were ready for sound. We actually voiced all the tiny noises and dialogue that you hear in the video. Scott Ballon '13 narrated for us and Trevor Teitel '09 composed the score.

The creation process was time consuming — 300 hours of work for two minutes of film — but it was worth every second. We learned an enormous amount, not only about animation, but also about dealing with professional clients and seeing a complicated project through to completion.

We hope you enjoy watching our video as much as we enjoyed making it!
